Kitchens are made to get messy.  A 2024 study reveals that the average American spends three hours a day in the kitchen, cooking, cleaning, and completing other various tasks that can quickly turn the room into chaos.

“When you’re spending a big chunk of your day in a space, you should consider adding features in your remodel or build that work for you — and help you manage what takes place in the room,” said David Kallie, MCR, CKBR, CAPS, president and CEO of Dimension Inc.

A butler’s pantry or a scullery can help replace the mess with luxury, elegance, and function. “A butler’s pantry or scullery is a separate extra space that we see more and more in remodels and new builds,” David said. “They alleviate many homeowners’ kitchen pain points.”

Which one is right for your next kitchen remodel or build? Find out:

When to Add a Butler’s Pantry
“The butler’s pantry — a separate space located between the kitchen and dining area — is a luxurious, walk-in pantry,” said David. “It is often full of shelves and cabinets to house dishware, cookware, appliances, and dry foods.”

When your kitchen is smaller, it can become full of appliances, dishes, and other items. If you find the clutter overwhelms the space, the butler’s pantry is for you.

While many homeowners use the butler’s pantry as extra storage to keep the kitchen clear, some may use it as a coffee bar or to plate meals when entertaining.

When a Scullery is the Solution
In contrast, if you are working with a large space for your kitchen remodel or build and feel that you need plenty of room to cook and clean effectively, then the added space of a scullery might be a practical fit.

“A scullery is practically a mini kitchen,” said David. “It often includes a sink, countertop, microwave, and dishwasher.”

The scullery is located off the main kitchen and can handle large tasks like cooking and food preparation, as well as big clean-up jobs after meals.

No matter your room or lifestyle, a butler’s pantry or scullery doesn’t just belong in the world of Downton Abbey — it may fit in your kitchen too.
